If you have a mobile phone, you can send yourself a gmail invite. Go to gmail's homepage for more information.

Besides Gmail, I don't know of any other great email providers. Myway was alright a few years ago, but I have no idea what it's like now.

I hear gmail is great, so if someone invites you go for that. Otherwise there are loads of simpler ones out there, such as those listed at: http://www.fepg.net/webbased.html and http://www.thefreesite.com/Email_Freebies/Free_E_mail_services_U_S_/
and http://uk.dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Communications_and_Networking/Internet_and_World_Wide_Web/Email_Providers/Free_Email/

If you're looking for something a lil different have a look at http://www.datapimp.com/ . The addresses you can have are hilarious, even if you don't dare actually use one :)

gmail is good. iwon turned out to be a virus of sorts. my friend used that and we tried to get rid of it once, thinking it was just a webpage that got stored as her main page when she opened explorer, but there was no way to delete it because it was a virus. so try gmail.
