I am currently living with my girlfriend and have been for the last 20 years. A few years ago she was diagnosed with symptoms of depression and put on prozac to start, she has been on 3 to 4 different kinds since then. Due to some $$$ trouble lately she has gone off of them and now is not being treated for her diagnosed problem. I have 2 kids (17 & 8) and with my girlfriends behavior as of late, have started worring about everyones (even my own) safety. She has slashed her wrist deeply once with a tramatic event that came into her life. I am worried about her, and for her (not to mention us as well). I am worried she might do something to me in particular that she might regret (or not) the rest of her life. We are trying (or I am trying) to recover from a case of infidelity aprox a year old now. I did the cheating so thats why I am most concerned. Please send me any observations of similarity or advise you might have upon reading this.

Though I have never been in this situation or even one similar I know that your gut instinct is the best instinct to follow. If you truly fear for you safety and the safety of your children then maybe you should move out. If your girlfriends symptoms are bad enough and you fear for her safety, maybe she could benefit from some time in a hospital for those with mental disabilities. Try to find a way to get her back on her meds if they helped her. Best of luck to you.

Hey Cruedude: I am no doctor but I do realize that it is dangerous to stop taking medications cold turkey. It's sad that $$$ has to play a part in a person's mental health. You have every right to be concerned about your children's safety as well as your own. Depression is a awful thing. I was renting my basement apartment to a gentleman and he suffered from various forms of depression and seasonal affective disorder. March 11 of this year I found him dead downstairs and he had written two suicide notes. It was awful as he had been there for 3 or 4 days the coroner said and he was quite swollen. Is there anyway that you can have your girlfriend spoken to by either a family doctor or some kind of specialist? This behaviour that she is exhibiting is also very tramatic on your young children's life's. Perhaps there is an emergency hot-line you can call in your area to see about different resources that may be available to help your lady friend out. Best of luck to you in trying to help, but please do not put either your life or that of your children's in harms way. Communicate what you are feeling with your girlfriend and tell her that your genuinely concerned for her mental health and want to see nothing but the best for her and that you'd like her to either return to prescription or see a specialist.

most people can bounce out of depression and with the strong will power can do without the medication. But in her case there sounds as if there is more to the problem. There has to be,no one can just have it and then go insane. There has to be a major problem in her life or between her and someone else, maybe you for her to go to such an extreme. Most people who slit their wrists aren't trying to kill themselves, because if they were they'd do it the right way. cutting wrists are an attempt to get attention to cry out about something. I know this first hand, I was a cutter. But inyhooz, you might want to risk the money situation to get a few sessions with a pychiatrist. In most cases a person depressed is very withdrawn and when it comes to thoughts of hurting yourself, you feel as if you have to push everyone away, leave no connections to leave no worry. But make it known you are worried and you care for her well being. Constantly remind her of your affection and or love for her,and she can confide in you. Who knows maybe being in a not so committed relationship(aka a wedding ring) could be the root of the problem. hope this helps and check out these websites:

My advice is to sleep with one eye open brother. Talk about it all you want to, but if she wants to give you the shiv, nothing you can do but try and stop the bleeding after it happens. You'll never see it coming.
