I think the whole point of the ending with him knocking on her door, not knowing if she is even still there, parallels the book he's written. Maya commented that there was a part she was not clear on. That's how the movie ends — we are not clear if they get together or not.

Yes, than she gets really mad at him because she finds out his friend who is getting married has been having sex with her friend.
