Does anyone know if you can get a pet if you are already in a household, or do you have to create a new family to get a pet in the household.

existing households will be able to get pets. i cant wait til it comes out! it looks so cool =]

Yes, your older established families can acquire a pet.

From other discussion on the registered user site, you can also adopt a pet that roams near your house. If your Sim likes a certain cat (or dog) and encourages it to stay, that Sim can adopt it. There are screen shots/previews of the game, which show there WILL be an option to adopt a pet from the phone, just like the child adoption works. So your sim families can check to see if the ones at the 'shelter' fit their lifestyles or not. So there seems to be at least 2 or 3 methods for an established family to get a pet (befriend a stray, adopt from the phone, and 'buy one' according to MaxisLittleL's blog link above. Pretty cool if you have a SelfSim and you want to add a pet or two or three. I think the option is something like a max of 6 pets.
As to the stray problem that occurred in UNLEASHED (Sims 1) Maxis is working to be sure that it won't get like "Strays gone wild" in the neighborhood, lol :)

You can adopt wild ones with the same family without creating a new one or you can buy one from the pet agency. You don't have to create a new fam. tho!!!!! Hope this helps!

I'm pretty sure that you can go to the pet shop with your family to get a pet. You dont necessarily have to create a new family. But OMG THATS MY FAVORITE GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
