An algea eater (catfish) will help. You can also find a product called "Nitraban" which helps reduce frequent water changes.
But there's no subsitute for regular cleaning - for a 10 gallon tank, you only need to change 2 gallons a week. That's not too time consuming and your fish will be much happier. (Keep in mind, they don't have a seperate bathroom) ick.
Just about any pet store should have the filter

UNDERGRAVEL filter
you can get that from any petstore, even walmart pet section has them.
keep the aquarium away from direct sunlight,
use less intense lights, like
use a tubelight instead of a regular bulb, and that too, do not leave it on for ever, fish need some rest too, so u have to switch off the lights on a regular basis. and
feed them only once a day,a nd only the amount that they can consume say in about 5 min
add aeration,
use Hang on the Back type filters rather than undergravel filter
u need an air pump alongwith the undergravel filter. a small air pump will make enuf bubbles to create the neccessary effect.
last but not the least, and which many ppl fail to understand - bigger the aquarium, lesser the maintenance required
in a 10gal maybe u ned to change the water on a weekly basis
where as on a hundred gallon u could wait for a month for the next water change, that too depending on the number of fish, and the type of filters that u have.
increase the number of filters
use two hang on the back type filters maybe AquaClear mini or Aquaclear 20. they r the best aquarium filters

Aquariums require a lot of work...You can't get away from it. However, good fishkeepng lessens it somewhat.
1) Don't overload the tank with fish.
2) Reducing the amount of light on & around the tank will inhibit algae growth. (Note: Always turn off aquarium light at night: fish need 10 hours of sleep.)
3) Don't overfeed. Feed one time each day. 1 flake for each inch of fish is sufficient food. (A neon tetra is a true inch fish: 1"H x 1"L: you must incl the fins in the measurement.)
4) 2 small cory cats & 1 algae eater per 10 gallons of water is a smart idea. (a 10g tank usually contains approximately 7 gallons of water...equipment, gravel, & decor should displace 3 gallons)
A clean tank reaps many rewards, most specifically: your fish's chance of survival is multiplied a thousand times.
Some fishes are cleaner than others. As a rule of thumb, I reccommend:
Tetras...10% water change every 3 weeks.
Angels...small: same as tetras...med to lg: 10% every 2 weeks.
Livebearers...25% every 3 weeks.
Gouramis...same as livebearers.
Goldfish...small: 25% every 2weeks...med: 25% weekly...lg: 50% weekly. (Goldfish are lovely but quite dirty.)
Cichlids...same as goldfish.
Community tanks...small fish: 10 to 20% every 2 weeks.
Replace siphoned water with fresh chemically-treated water...adding it to the tank 1 gallon at a time (so as not to stress the fish).
Adding an undergravel filter is healthy for the fish. Water will be clearer also--especially when used in conjunction with a back power filter. It does not, however, reduce the work. You will never need to remove the UG filter if you do timely changes. Siphoning the water from the bottom, through the gravel, removes debris...it does NOT disturb the biological filter.
All fish stores should carry all sizes of undergravel filters.
Cover with a 2" substrate (gravel).
Good luck!

I find that the filters that hang on the side keep my aquariums cleaner. If you have the underground type you have to take everything out to clean. But you have to have the dimensions of your tank to buy an underground filter. Measure it and then try Petsmart online to order one. Good luck.

fish or anphibian? there are water treatment products that will extend the life of your water up to 6 months. tetra is a good brand. i have a water turtle and she does fine. the filter needs to be changed regularly and i use a gravel vacuum about every 4 months. an under gravel filter can be had from your local petco or petsmart. they also will have people wh can give you advice and help.
good luck!

It is not a underground filter but my family has always been big into having fish for pets and so far the best filtration system that we have found is the bio-wheel filtration system.

Have you tried getting those "sucker fish"? They're like a catfish, also known as "Bottom Feeders". They do a nice cleaning job 24/7.
