The SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) is a worldwide organization, though it has a great deal more activity in the USA than in many other countries. It is devoted to the preservation/utilization of medieval skills. The organization divides regions into kingdoms, and then further subdivides it into feudal sects, earldoms, dukedoms etc. Regional/city/town groups organize events, wherein members participate in demonstrations of early fighting arts, such as jousting, dueling and knife fighting. Members create characters, which are incredibly realistic, and which they enter totally. A character can be from any region of the world and possess the skills typically found in that region, or for that type of character. I'm not sure, but i think that as it is a modern organization, role reversals are acceptable (eg. female knight) but many members also play roles of the other gender (eg. female member playing male knight) to enhance the realism. You could most definitely find out more on their site.

I've been a member for 28 years (yeah, yeah...I know). The SCA certainly isn't for everyone, but it suits dweebish nutcases who like to make things with their hands and are willing to eat any weird thing on their plates. The music's good, too.

It can be pretty goofy, but if you enjoy participating / acting in Renaissance Festivals, you'd probably like SCA as well.
