I've got a 1540 in the GRE and a CGPA of 9.55 on a scale of 10. I am thinking of applying to top 10 univs for mechancial engg. in the U (like MIT, Stanford, Ann Arbor etc.). Could someone please tell me which college I should be looking at for a Masters in mechanical, given that I want to be picked up by an automobile company after my MS (for a job in research and devpt.)

The best Master's program in automotive engineering is at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I've posted their website below.
It's an interdisciplinary program, based in mechanical engineering, but tailored to the needs of students who want to focus on automotive engineering.

Below that is a website hosted by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) that provides basic information on automotive engineering, as well as some interesting facts about the pursuit of study in the field. You'll note that automakers are also interested in electrical engineers.

I think that as long as you go to a good engineering school, it doesn't really matter which. For engineering students the most important thing is to get an internship or co-op in your field of choice, and the way to do that is either to go to a school with a great career fair (Purdue and Iowa State University have the largest ones in the nation) or go to a school that has close corporate ties.

If you want to work for domestic auto makers, try Michigan. If you want to work internationally, look at a place with study/work abroad opportunities; I know Daimler-Chrysler has a pretty awesome program in Germany that some American students take advantage of.
