I think it is third base because small amount of time you have to react to some of the hot shots you get in the corner, and the long throw you have to make.

It seems in your question you're talking about the position players other than pitcher so I will leave the pitcher out...

Physically the "toughest" position would be catcher of course.

Which position takes the most all around skill? that would be the Shortstop, sure helps to have great range and arm to be a good SS

I'm with you though when it comes to third, I played ball for a lot of years including 6 years of playing for independent league teams..I pitched, played short-second-first-all three OF positions and was mainly know as a great glove, average hitter. But, the few times I played there, I was a walking disaster at third, I have no idea why, it wasn't for a lack of confidence in my glove or arm..But, I sure stunk out the joint at third...Thanks so much for bringing up bad memories. haha

without a doubt.. CATCHER

there is a reason that as a general rule, few catchers excede the 120 games played in an ML season, while virtually every infield position and out field position has muiltiple players that top 150 of the 162 games played..

The average career behind the plate is usually three or four years fewer than other positions.. Craig Biggio was moved from behind the plate to second base and eventually the outfield to extend his career..

Catchers almost daily will take a foul tip off some part of their body.. and they must be in constant non-verbal communication with their pitchers...

3rd base may need the best reaction skills, but the average third sacker sees four to five plays a game.. The catcher is involved in every single pitch..

catcher. besides the issues with the knees and the gear. catchers have to know all of the opposing batters strengths and weakness'. they are the field generals. they control the speed of the game plus the fact when there are runners on base they call pitch outs and have to attempt to throw out base runners attempting to steal. they also have to know there own pitching staff, who can throw what and who can locate pitches where. they have to have there head in the game every inning. they call catching gear the tools of ignorance but i have yet to see an ignorant catcher keep all of that in order.

Catcher

As a Catcher you call the game.. you squat forever, and you have to deal with people crashing into you at full force.. also, the long throw to second on the steal, and placing the tag at home..

My son is 11yrs old and has played since he was 4yrs. I would say the pitcher has a pretty tough job. Between keeping the runs down, his pitching must be consistant, and that can be tough. My son is left handed, and has NEVER pitched, he prefers to catch, or to be in centerfield. Pitchers also have more injuries, and risk of fatal injuries, especially when that ball is slammed right back at you.

catcher. There is so much pressure on you especially when there's a runner at third. And squatting for hours sucks! They don't get enough credit for what they do.
