I am in my mid-30's and considering a career change. Due to the fact that I would need to invest a fair amount of time and money to become a funeral director (while caring for a home and family), I'd like some opinions from those currently in the field.

I am a licensed funeral director and I find the job to be extremely rewarding. It is not always about sadness and crying, it is about celebrating a life lived and the lives that person touched. Embalming is enjoyable because you get to make the person look like themselves again. The hours aren't always desireable but the job is very rewarding and I wouldn't give up my life as a funeral director for anything else. I absolutely love it. I hope you find what you are looking for, good luck and God bless you and your family!

I think the worst part about being a funeral director is that you don't know how emotional a particular family will be. You could have people crying over every little thing. That would be hard for me. I wouldn't know how to sympathize with everyone.

Dealing with the survivors, is far worse than dealing with the bodies, I'm not a funeral director, but this is what I learned by watching "Six Feet Under"

Some say its a dead end job.

As long as you cover your bases ie: a creamation oven, you should do ok because everyone at some point, will be visiting the likes of you.

You can wear little black dresses all the time and the people you work with don't complain and never stab you in the back (unless of course they are undead).
