Cinema Paradiso. This is one of the most honored foreign films ever. It's a story of a famous Italian film director going home to his small home town and thinking back to the early 1950's when he was a child. There was an old movie theater that was the social center of the town.
It shows his relationship with the projectionist who was like a surrogate father, among other things.
Anyone who professes to love movies should see this film.

The best foreign film I have ever seen would have to be A Tale of Two Sisters, it's Korean a movie. It's a psycological thriller, it is actually one of my favorite movies of all time. That's saying a lot. I guess the reason I like it so much would have to be because it is so different from anything else. The ending is absolutly insane, I had to watch again to figure out exactly what was going on! It reminds me a little of The Sixth Sense, but it is nothing like it. It's hard to explain without giving the movie away.

OK--I'm totally excited about this. Recently I saw a movie called Battle Royale. It's a cheap Japanese film that supposedly was not released in the US. Basically the movie is about a law that's passed which requires one 9th grade class per year to get sent to an island where they are forced to kill each other off. It's sort of a game, and it lasts 3 days. If there is more than one survivor by that time, they all die.
They have these exploding neckbands that go off if they're in danger zones or if they try to take them off.

It's just crazy to see how one minute there's a group of adolecent kids, and the next and next and next they're killing each other off--really sort of fight or flight. It's crazy.
YOU SHOULD DEFINATLEY WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!

Roberto Benigni's "Life Is Beautiful"
A magnificent story of life in a WWll concentration Camp, and how one man with an enormous talent made his little son think that this horrible time inhis life was just a game...
Pity the father has to die in the last few minutes of the film...that makes you dissolve in tears of frustration for the loss of this wonderful mans life!
Definitely worth seeing (even if I've told you the end!)

The Princess and the Warrior (German w/ English subtitles) I just thought it was a beautiful love story. Both of the main character were damaged and thought they weren't worth love, but decided to love each other. (Run Lola Run was good too...)

The Island of Lost Children (Frenchw/ English sbtls) I just have a thing for Ron Perlman....... But after I watched the movie, I loved it! Totally surreal and bizarre, but extremely cool.

Tough call. I like Carlos Saura's "Carmen" so much I bought the video before I even had a VCR! It's a story within a story -- Antonio Gades plays himself -- dancer, director, etc. -- looking for a woman to play Carmen in a sort of flamenco ballet adaptation of Bizet's opera (can't remember the original author of the book). Unfortunately for him, he finds the perfect Carmen (coincidentally named Carmen) and life begins to imitate art. Like the character she plays, Carmen is self-centered and as amoral as an alleycat -- and Antonio is as jealous as the soldier who loves her in the opera. Nice cutting back and forth so you are not sure if you are watching the play or life -- and a very funny sendup of the song "Toreador".

My current favorite (I love mushy romantic stuff) is Veer-Zaara, a Hindi movie about a Pakistani girl (Zaara) and an Indian man. (Veer). The movie begins with the man in a Pakistani prison and a lawyer reopening his case and trying to free him. Through flashbacks, we see how he happened to meet and fall in love with Zaara -- and what separated them. Funny in spots, but the ending always makes me choke up.

Well, a bunch of others folks already said "Life is Beautiful", so I'm going to have to go with "House of Flying Daggers". I consider it on par with "Crouching Tiger...". Visually stunning, romantic, great story, etc.

Run Lola Run. I usually don't like subtitled movies, but the plot was very interesting.
