1. tomato guy needs to chill. i respect the notion that we shouldn't be needlessly critical of broadcasters when they do a good job and we simply dislike their style. but kay is a whole 'nutha ball of wax.
2. kay's problems as the yankees' "play-by-play" guy are hard to sum up. the biggest one to me is that he tends to be far too analytical for my taste in a play-by-play guy (in fact, he more or less analyzes *everything*). it almost seems like his broadcast is a continuation of (and/or leader into) his ESPN radio talk show - he weaves popular media storylines into almost every call. it just gets taxing to listen to. i hear the storylines enough outside of the game; when your job is to call the game, just call the damn game.

Uh. I'm not from your region (I'm in Philly/Balto) but I have to say something about this.
On the radio, the announcer's job is to paint as complete a picture as possible. Not only is this how they are trained but it also makes TOTAL SENSE.
If you listen to every game, that's fantastic. You don't need to hear all of the ins and outs of the uniforms, the field, etc. However, the announcer MUST ASSUME that each listener is listening to their very first ballgame. If I move to New York and want to hear the Yankees and know nothing else about them (which is possible folks), I want to be able to picture everything. I want to hear the sounds, see the sights and even smell the smells of the stadium through my radio.
Listen sometime to how a football announcer does a ballgame, take the Eagles' Merrill Reese for example. "The Eagles are moving from the left to right, wearing their home, midnight green uniforms with the white pants. Number 5, Donovan McNabb brings the offense to the line. Hank Basket out to the far side. Brian Westbrook sets up behind McNabb dotting the I formation....."
Get an appreciation for the nuances before you whine. Otherwise, don't listen. OK?
(Why am I so frustrated about this one? Oh well...see ya)

Part of the problem is that the Yankees have so many color analysts that Kay can't efffectively get out of the way of Kaat, Singleton, Justice, Murcer, O'Neill, etc. In Boston, for example, where it is just a 2-man TV booth, Don Orsolo is required to be more of a counterpoint to Jery Remy and handles it much more effectively. What's really strange these days is listening to Vin Scully still do a Dodgers TV broadcast all by himself!

You are correct sir. Kay is very annoying. I'm enough of a Yankee fan that I really don't notice it anymore. I hated him more when he was on radio. Remember how he's always describe the uniforms in detail? "The Yankees are in their home white uniforms with navy pinstripes...the navy interlocking "NY" on the left breast... navy caps with same white interlocking "NY".. jersey number on the back and of course....no name"
Ugh.

I think he sucks so bad. He keeps inventing catch phrases and is basically an ego hungry buffoon. I wish I could meet him just so I could tell him how terrible he is. He thinks the game is about him. He s the worst I ever heard. And how the hell did he get that woman to marry him?
