A fairy, in myth, is a gender-neutral term. It doesn't mean a female (or a male). The word comes from the enchanted realm these mythical creatures supposedly came from, and it applies to all the residents, male and female. (We're just so used to seeing Disney's female version of fairies that we've got that stereotype branded in our minds.) In its broadest definition, "fairy" covers most magical creatures, such as elves, gnomes, brownies, etc.
