They can not be cured at this time anyway.
They should see a psychologist and get medicine from a psychiatrist.
Exercise at least 3 times a week for thirty minutes.
Eat the recommended daily amount of fruit and/or vegetables.
Pray
Having friends and even a pet to share time with is important.
Do things for others to help them.
Most importantly have a routine and focus on what you are doing so that you won't just focus on yourself. By getting things done, you will feel a sense of accomplishment.
Small steps... small, small steps. Don't overwhelm yourself. And don't be afraid to try different medicines if yours is not working for you after 2 months. Keep a journal of nightmares and of how you feel to see what may be causing you to feel stressed.

I don't know a whole lot but my mum has bi-polar and there is nothing you can do to make it go away you have to take medication every day for the rest of your life and there is the slight chance of putting on weight when you take medication.
Diet, regular exercise( going to the gym) and not letting it take over life will improve the persons well being and if there really not coping well talk to a doctor or a family member as they may have got depression.
Hope this helped a bit.

Taking medications in conjunction with psychotherapy. But you have to keep in mind that the medications are effective only 70% of the time. For some people, they simply do not work. There are many medications used in the treatment of bi-polar disorder and not all put on weight. If you have bi-polar disorder, putting on weight is the least of your problems. There is absolutely no known cure for bi-polar disease. Other than that, they should be doing what the rest of the world should be doing-eating a balanced diet and living a balanced life to the best of their ability. . There is no magic bullet for this serious disease. It will impact every aspect of the sufferer's life.

I don't know about the meds, but I do know something of the workings of memory. It's probably one of the most difficult things to do, to track ones own mood swings, but noting events and mood differences on a calendar may help inform you of the timing of the transition from manic to depression to mania again. Bipolar is about the discontinuity in personal identity, a split or schizism between cognition and spiritual transition. The other reason that it is so difficult is that this specific spiritual condition transformation is less concrete, or physically sensible. It is not like the awareness of the onset of anger, fear or sexual arousal or attraction and not even love, but vague yet powerful feelings of pleasure and pain that have no physical co-relate, no position in physical space, therefore these two poles are difficult to identify in relation to the time of all other experiences. The two poles, the antitheses, one a negation and the other a negation for the negation, have no subjects but each other and operate outside of our consciousness of our constituents of human essence that flow together to indiscernablity, into a foggy recollection of memory, like fluids that are poured together.
From a concrete vantage point, it is possible to reign them in to their natural yoke, to the split between, thereby filling that gap of identity.
Many of the answers here already are good answers, useful. Here is some additional information that may help in your quest for self reintegration. Relax and read it through slowly allowing your mind many opportunites to interpret it in various ways.
Love is not a thing
Knowing Love itself is self knowledge that rises above that which was. What was you is now past you, different. But if love is not differentiated in abstraction, then what guide is there for knowing the love from another. It is not enough that you love, but to know what it is as certainly as knowing all other constituents of human essence: psychology.
Here in summary form: Legend of symbols:
'+' = 'a joining', 'a physical contact', 'will to communicate', generally positive, not negating but positing, positioning, proposing...
'-' = a negation, taking a part, destruction, removal, exclusion, ....
Love without specifying relationship nor act specification: + + + +
Sexual activity: - + + + (the reason for the minus "-" is the breaking down for resistence in the form anxiety (drugs, alcohol, ideology), loveless sex has this uncertainty whereas love filled sexual activity has no such uncertainty or resistence)
Sadism: - - + + (this form of aggression has a psychological component that may described spiritual, superstitious, ideological. One '+' is for this 'spiritual component' and the other '+' the will or urge to get at the victim)
Aggression in the form hostility, anger: - - - + (the pure will to destroy, uncluttered with ideology, higher ideal, the unreality of superstition or supernaturality, no abstraction is possible, it is negated. The last '+' is the physical excertion upon the object, the sole but very limited contact with reality, the victim)
defense: - - - - (the will to escape danger, there is no component for contact, the negation desired is total and instantaneous, immediate, to flee, to avert the senses from the threat, ...)

How other Bipolar people do it.
By keeping a low profile and keeping their mouth shut when they are supposed to.
It's not hard. I was diagnosed 5 years ago. I told the doc to take the pills in his money grubbing hands and shove the pills up his *** until they pop out of his nose.
Exercise everyday. That means your mind, your body, and your spirit. Stretch your emotional capacity through stressful situations. Purposefully push yourself into manic crazes to minimize the relapses. Conduct personal sleep experiments.
Basically push yourself into a frenzy before anybody else can. Contain your frustrations until you are in a safe environment.

While both the mental and physical aspects are important, it is important not to forget your spiritual health, seeing as they are all related. Stay close to God and rely on Him. He will get you through things when you cannot get through them on your own.
