why not just call pakistanis, pakistani? why is there a need for a specific term? What are you? an American? but what american? south american or north american? but obviously you have roots somewhere else because your roots didn't originate here unless you're native american...even so they weren't originally here either were they...so what would you be called?

Erm well they wouldn't like to be called Indian cos they're not. It's like calling the Germans French or the Americans Cuban. If you're looking for a collective term, it's south Asian. Also, desi is a hard term to explain, it means something like 'from the land back home'; in its purest form, desi means land. Technically, Pakistanis originate from India but that's another story!!

Call them both Indians because they were just divided by their faiths...........Honestly, no, don't do it......You need not to look for other names but Pakistani. they will like you for it. I really do not know about Desi. it is not even in my dictionary so I cannot help you how to pronounce it.

Both countries were used to be ruled by a single ruler (under India), until Pakistan were granted independence and formed a separate state. Pakistanis are citizen of Pakistan and Asian Indians are citizens of india, both located in cetral Asia. The names of both countries are deeply written in world history, changing it, I believe, is not a good idea. If ever, let them pass a bill on their own rights (Pakistan and India) to have it change, if they wish. You, what would you prefer to call yourself by Pakistanis and Indians?

Pakistani are not Indian, which is why they don't like being called Indian. You could either say "The Pakistani" or refer to some as "He/she is from Pakistan."
If it's someone you know, just call him or her by name.
