Screen printing, serigraphy , there are many methods, all are pretty simple and the components are available at Michaels for most. I printed for years and did some wonderful stuff, still have some old hand made tee shirt stuff in the garage. it is a learned skill not an art so practice will make you a good printer, poor but proud! try the old method of glue and touche, it's artsy!

While it'll be a bit more expencive at first, silk screening is the ideal way to go. I silk screened a few shirts last year and they still look brand new, and they look as though they were done by a professional.
If you're looking for an uber cheap way to go, however, just get iron-on transfers. They look like garbage and come off in just a few washings, but you get what you pay for.

Design stuff on a computer and print it out on transfer material you can buy at any computer store that is big or best buy etc...
Or use crayons and draw your design on the shirt...then iron it with a paper between the shirt and your iron...a wash gets rid of the wax but the color stays!

It's called Serigraphy...
Try Michaels Handrafts Supply shops...you will probably find kits there and maybe a booklet with the "how to..."
Or you can hand paint (freehand) your own designs on them with special fabric paint which you can also find in craft shops.
Then too, there are the modern computer design things.
It's fun...good luck!
(Remember to rinse whichever in water with a cup of vinegar to fix the colours before the first wash).

You can design it in your paint program then upload the design to CafePress. They will open a shop for you that you can sell the design to other people from. Once someone buys a couple then you can get your own copy of the shirt for free from your shop profits.

I've never done it, but you can by transfer paper from an office supply store. Then print what you want on the paper using your own printer. You need an iron and flat surface.
It sounds easy, but I believe it's tricky to get it to come out right.
