I was adopted when I was nine...my family started looking for a little girl around the age of my brother...so about 2 weeks after picking me out of 150 different girls they came and met me and about a year after that I moved in and then they legally adopted me two years later...but my baby brother on the other hand was adopted within 2 days of us getting taken from our parents...it all depends...
and believe me when I say...dont EVER keep the adoption a secret...it is the worst thing you could possible do...it could come back and bite you in the rump when your adoptee is older...
you will not regret it one bit...love that child as if he/she were your own flesh and blood...dont ever let that child know that you feel weird about punishing or taking control...you are the mother and that is the way it needs to be...
and be very careful if you get an older child...they can sometimes be a huge handful...take my elder sister for example...she was put in Juvy for 5 years...some of the older kids know what happened and why, so they resent their biological parents....

We had our daughter within 3 months of filling out our paperwork. 5 years is a scare tactic that is just not close to being true. I recommend finding an adoption agency to help you. Finding a birthmom is tough on your own, and has more challenges involved. If you really want a private adoption (which an agency can do) find an adoption attorney.
Our daughter is 7, she was 2 months old when she came home. She was born in Maryland, but we were in ATL. Our social worker found her for us and we went to pick her up. All total it cost about $12,000, but that isn't all upfront money. Good luck. You won't regret it.

I know its a horrible industry, but it actually depends on how specific you are. Girls take longer... caucasian girls especially because statistically they are put up for adoption less often. You have to pass many screening exams and they are harder on parents who want to adopt newborns than be foster/adoptive parents to other ages. If you are even considering it, I would suggest starting now in order to have the baby in a year or so.

you should go through an adoption agency...more accurate and faster. Its illegal to do it any other way unless you know someone who just wants to up and give up on their child. But I don't know any private people who just wants to give their kid or kids up for adoption without going through an agency. That is not right. Very very Illegal. How would the mother feel if you weren't right to raise the baby...you could be a molester...or some kind of monster...be right and go through the agency.

My cousin is adopting my other cousins baby right now. They have had the baby since birth but she is 3mo. old now and the adoption process is still not done. I think it defers for every specific thing and different state as well. Good luck to you though.
