https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/pubs/hdbk/speed_limits Ca DMV says 15. but this is way too fast in a gravel, dark alley. especially if there are houses with children playing. not that children play in dark alley, but they do walk at night, children play in alleys during day. when going at those speeds and if an animal or kid suddenly appears the vehicle will continue to travel another 8 to 10 feet.

I can't imagine going over about 5 in most alleys. So I say no more then 10 for sure!

I would say no faster than 15 MPH. In FL, that's what the speed limit is in a school crossing zone.

I had never seen a speed limit sign in the alley but I think they think it’s pedal to the metal

I would say 10 mph if you can't see oncoming side traffic within 50 ft. (like that trick question about blind RR crossings the Calif DMV seems to spring on their tests from time to time.)
Unless
- the cops are chasing you
- the ally ends in a wall
- you drive the Batmobile
- your car's wheels are made of Flubber.

Normally it is 10 to 15 MPH. Some jurisdictions have it at 5MPH. Watch for postings, they can get sneaky sometimes.
