There's a difference in not telling something and telling a lie. If the truth is something you really do not want to share, do not do so. This does not give you a license to lie... lying is never appropriate as it destroys trust despite any motive you may have had.

I think the truth is just not worth telling when it might interfere with the physical or mental well-being of another person. Personally, I wouldn't lie unless I needed to protect myself or others I care about from physical or emotional harm.

When innocence is going to hurt by it perhaps. I've never liked seeing the truth be deployed as a hurtful weapon, I'd think that a good reason to refrain from employing it. My opinion only of course. Interesting question; thank you.

It's always best to tell the truth. But there are exceptions to all rules and if I had to chooses between devastating a person or omitting the truth I would omit.

If you are asked to tell the truth, then you should. Otherwise if its on a volunteer basis then it depends. If it is going to hurt or devastate, or if there is no real good reason, other than to clear YOUR mind, then I would not recommend it. There must be a true legitimate reason that is absolutely beneficial to that person for one to volunteer such a "noble" act.
