it could mean a urinary tract infection or a kidney malfunction

You could be suffering from a urniary tract infection (UTI) or nephritis (kidney infection). Therefore the characteristic symptom of nephritis is proteinuria — meaning the excessive removal of protein from the blood and its excretion in urine. This is a very serious condition and you should consult a physician immediately. Nephritis (and UTIs) can be treated with simple antibiotics, but it needs to be seen to ASAP.

I had the unfortunate experience of a kidney infection. I had a little bit of blood in my urine and a mild (more annoying) pain in my lower back on the left side. But those were my only real symptoms and they persisted for about 15 hours with no consequence. I went to bed and woke up about 5 hours later in excruciating pain. My whole left side was numb, like half of my body had been shot with novocaine.

Even if its not nephritis, you should still go to the MD immediately and let them tell you its nothing. Trust me, you don't want to be rushing to the emergency room at 4 AM.
