i pods are alot more expensive and have worse battery life, but you can watch videos, they have a larger, liquid crystal display, with color, and they hold more songs usually. It really depends on what you're looking for.

An ipod is a type of mp3 player. Mp3 player is a generic term to label any digital device that can play music stored in a digital medium. Mp3 is the most common sound format with the microsoft .wma format in second. Most of the latest players now play video. As for which device is a better choice that all depends on what you want to do. ipod is the big name brand but the only real advantage is that there are a number of peripheral devices available. The lack of peripherals is becoming less of a problem however since now products are showing up to fit ipod and other mp3 devices. I personally prefer the Creative Zen because it is cheaper than an ipod and just as good if not better.

An iPod is an MP3 player. There are other MP3 players as well. Some of the companies that manufature MP3 players (other than Apple) are Creative Labs, iRiver, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, SanDisk, and Sony.
Generally, MP3 players come in two flavors. Solid-state memory players (including iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano) have no moving parts, are very light, small, and relatively cheap, have a long battery life, but have much smaller storage space (early models had as little as 128 Mb; today, you can have up to 8Gb). Players with a hard drive (including the iPod proper) have it all in reverse; lots of storage space (the first iPod had 20 Gb, now Apple has 30Gb and 60Gb models), but are larger, heavier, more expensive, and may have shorter battery life.
Which one is better? It's entirely up to you. What's more important for you, storage space or price? Also, you may love a player based on specs, but hate it because you don't like the control interface or software that comes with it...

you can't play any music files except for the ipod type music files on an ipod. an ipod breaks easily. and, an ipod jacks up a lot too. you can transfer music from most mp3 players to a computer. you can't do that with an ipod unless you download a certain type of program.
get an mp3 player.
