Why are most inanimate objects referred to as female?

Because men love women.A woman is the ultimate companion of a man.I think it's natural for a man to give the other things they love or have a closeness to a female name.

I guess it's a holdover from when English had genders for all nouns. Now we only have them for pronouns, but used to be, everything had its own gender and there were masculine, feminine and neuter nouns. Most countries think of themselves as female, like, say, Mother Russia (but Germany is the Fatherland--I don't get that one. It's an anomaly, I suppose.)

I don't remember my genders from Old English, but maybe methods of transportation were considered female because they, um, hold things? Like a woman's, y'know...I don't know. That's a stretch, but I could be right.
