Seven year olds need a lot of visual stimulation. You have to make the task of learning fun! Create flash cards out of simple, inexpensive index cards, OR just use cut up pieces of paper. Have the defination on one side, and the word on the other. Make it a game. Have them write on lined paper the numbers down the page (one through 10 or whatever). Go through the words by definition and see if they get the right spelling. Go through them again for review (especially the ones missed!) and just give them the word after that and have them WRITE it! Spelling out loud is much different than writing the word...different cognitive skills used. This should do it everytime, Plus, the child will learn the meaning and have something to relate the word to (called pnuemonics), and actually remember the meaning of the word, thus, DOUBLE LEARNING! Good luck!

Play a game of Candyland (or some other game), only each time they pick up a card, they have to spell a word. This works because a) we learn better when we're having fun, and b) we remember more the more our senses are tied to something.

Practice testing is probably going to be the most efficient thing. Have him/her write and rewrite the words a few times, and then quiz him/her as many times as it takes for a perfect score.

Play Jeopardy time game with him/her. Scrabble will also help, but not as much as the former game.

it's been proven that people who read most are the best spellers and know the most words, so try that.
