I am interested in finding out special education programs/courses - short term and/or long term, that will help educate teachers/trainers in teaching kids and/or adults in the autistic spectrum. I know that there are certain schools dedicated to teaching students in the spectrum, but do the teachers in these schools go special training and if so which ones?

I teach special education students, including quite a few with autism. My county also has several classes which are specifically designed for students with autism. All of us get specialized training. Two of the agencies/ programs which our county uses are TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren), which was developed by the University of North Carolina and (specifically for communication skills) PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) which is taught by Pyramid Educational Systems. You can find more info on both of these programs by typing them into any search engine.

Almost all of the universities are beginning to offer workshops that assist education professionals in teaching children who have been diagnosed with disorders in the autistic spectrum. You can inquire with the Special Education department in any of the universities near to where you live. BER out of Washington, DC has several programs which are offerred in different locations in the US. All teachers holding Special Education Degrees in the state of Ohio and licensed within the last few years have had specific training in the above area. While I can't speak for other states, I have to presume that because of the upswing in diagnosis of the various disorders that this is true in the other states as well. Kent State in Ohio has a great Special Education program. You might also try your state's (province, etc.) Department of Education. They might be able to recommend some specific programs.

I graduated from UT Austin 44 years ago and was trained in special education , including teaching autistic children. Any major university offers such diverse training from speech pathology with autistic children....you name it.....

Not sure where you live. In MI, try the ACE (autism collaborative endorsement).....on-line classes offered by six participating Michigan universities. You must have a teaching certificate with a special ed. endorsement to enroll. Check it out at www.gvsu.edu
