My favorite musical is My Fair Lady - it has great songs that fit in with the great story which is based on George Bernard Shaw's classic play Pygmalion.
Here are the wonderful songs:
Why Can't the English?"
"Wouldn't It Be Loverly?"
"With a Little Bit o' Luck"
"I'm an Ordinary Man"
"The Servants' Chorus"
"Just You Wait"
"The Rain in Spain"
"I Could Have Danced All Night"
"Ascot Gavotte"
"On the Street Where You Live"
"You Did It"
"Show Me"
"Get Me to the Church On Time"
"A Hymn to Him"
"Without You"
"I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face"
These songs have great lyrics, great music, and great humor and/or psychological depth. What more can be asked for in a musical? My Fair Lady has it all!

Each person is going to have there own opnion, based on personal style and emotions to the shows.
For Me, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is the best, funny and enjoyable, perfact for pure entertainment, and a show only able to be done on the stage.
Others will say classics, such as Sound of Music or the such. And others will tell you new modern stuff, like Wicked or Producers.
So you need to judge for yourself. Enjoy them all. What are you looking for in the best.Musical ever. Enjoyment, Writing, Music, Style, Critical Aclaim?

My favorite is Les Miserables. Good music, great characters, and a sensational plot. Eponine has the most heart-wrenching songs. I absolutely love it.
A second close favorite is Little Shop of Horrors because it's pure campy fun.

At the moment it is "Once Upon a Mattress" - because I just finished appearing in it.
All time favorite - "Godspell". Meet my wife of 33 years while working on Godspell. Have directed the show three times, and toured with it once. All four of my kids and both my son-in-laws have appeared in the show at least once. And last year, when your "Jesus" had to miss a rehearsal, my six-year-old grandson, who had attended every rehearsal with his mother, stepped in and did all the lines perfectly - including the soft shoe dance. So hopefully at some point we will have a third generation doing Godspell

I don't know if it's a musical, but it has numerous "song moments". I think Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas.

Definatly Singin in the Rain with Gene Kelly. That is the best movie/music EVER. I am completly obsessed with it. The corny jokes never get old, and I always cry at the end. You should DEFINATLY see it!!!!
