Buy a new one. Especially if it smells sour or old. It's full of germs, so why spread them all over the floor when you "think" you're cleaning. Yuck.

To make your mop smell fresh and clean, you should wash it in some Lysol or Pinesol, wring tightly until damp (or almost dry) and place out in the sun for a couple of hours.

A guarantee... if you use ammonia to remove the excess wax on the floor your mop will NEVER smell foul!!! I have always used ammonia and as bad as it smells while you are using it, it is the freshest smelling cleaner....I also use it in the wash and dilute it in a spray bottle as a replacement for fabric and carpet freshener...I guarantee it!!!

I put water and bleach in my mop bucket and let it set for a while then rinse it and hang it to dry.

I would take it out in the yard and blast it awhile with the hose and then swish it around in a bucket of water with some clorox, rinse again and then dry it in the sun.
