how do i find a check that was issued to me and cashed by somebody else? what do i look up?

the state of colorado mailed me a check to my old address in AZ. and my mother in law signed my name and cashed it. I don't know what the check was for. how do i find out?

You have to get a copy of the cancelled check from the party that issued it.
