These are all sayings that I heard growing up in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and as an adult I taught them to my children. We live by wives tales and old sayings. I have millions of them.... I just thought these kinda went together! Hope you like them but most of all remember them and see if they work!

The biggest Myth/ wives tale that I heard while growing up is that if you swallowed a water melon seed that you would get pregnant. I was so freaked out because after I was told this it was like every pregnant woman that I saw was eating water melon. I swore never to eat watermelon. My dad ate water melon and he had a big beer belly and you couldn't imagine what I was thinking... or could you. I was only like 5 or 6.. Ha-ha

Let's see... if the rooster crows three times during the day it's gonna rain, if thunders in the winter, it will snow within 9 days, if there's a circle around the moon, count the stars within the cirlce, and it will rain in that many days. My mom also does something that has to be passed to a non relative not in your generation that will get rid of colic in babies. She can't tell anyone, or it won't work anymore. My dad can also buy your warts. He gives you a quarter and the wart goes away.

1. If some one sweeps on your foot with a broom you wont get married
2. If your entering the house after midnight you must walk backwards, so evil spirits wont follow you in.
3. If you put cold from a dogs eyes in your eyes you will see evil spirits
4. You must not call your children's names out loud because the douens (evil spirits of children who were not baptised before they died) would come and call them and take them away.
5. If an ambulance passes and the dogs howl at it that person in the ambulance is going to die.

If you eat apple pips a tree will grow in your belly, if you don't wash out your ears, spuds'll grow in them, if you eat the crusts of bread your hair will curl, stare at the tv too long (or too close) and your eyes will go square, if the wind changes while your pulling faces you'll be stuck like that, girls can hold their water longer than boys (thats why girls gotta wait till the boys have used the loo), if you pick your nose your brains'll fall out...........

man o man:

if u make a funny facial expression, your face will stay that way

if u watch tv in the dark you can go blind. (also if u sit too close to the tv)

if u find a penny on the ground, pick it up, and u'll have good luck

if u eat carrots your eyesite will improve

if u eat cheese, u'll get constipated (lol)

if u put fresh lettuce in your purse, it will bring u luck (possibly money)

if a candle flame suddenly goes out, a ghost/spirit is nearby (spooky)

if birds (esp. black ones) huddle up by your house, someone in the house will die

if your ear burns someone is talking about u.

*also* (from grandma) : if it rains while it's sunny, the devil and his wife are fighting...sometimes if u put your ear to the ground u will be able to hear them fighting....

if u fall on the ground, it is the devil himself trying to pull u closer to him (spooky)

Hmmm. Had an aunt who was Christian Scientist and she told me in 1958 that God would never let us get to the moon or the other planets because they were perfect and the only place not perfect was earth. Oh wait.....that's true, isn't it?

I don't know if this falls into your answer criteria.

My southern mom from the small town of Swainsboro, Ga always refers to this man named "Cooda Brown", she even sings a song about him when she's intoxicated:

Cooda Brown
The drunkest man in town,
Washes his *ss in a frying pan.
Oh, Cooda Brown, you dirty ole man.

She even refers to him in daily convo:

"Baby I got drunk as Cooda Brown"
"That girl was ugly as Cooda Brown"
"Cooda Brown ain't even nasty enough to mess with so-n-so."

For most of my life up until at least junior high. I thought Cooda Brown was a real man. LOL

girls should always wear pink, children are seen not heard, oh, and if dogs eat chocolate it will kill them, (i've seen a dog eat it first time, and they were perfectly fine), and that if you go outside at midnight on a full moon buck-naked and dance around the barn before your does kid, you'll have does. (it's called the doe dance) one thing that i was told that was true though, was;

"one thing told, another thing heard" think about it, true huh?
