wow is this world messed up.
myself, taking my third year of french in high school, believe that language, no matter what it is, is wholly acceptable, and in no wise unpatriotic. i dk what sealrborders was thinking, but apparently they didnt get a high enough education in high school. multi-linguistic is just saying how intelligent you are, and anyone who whines about how bad it is, is simply jealous of not having the brain capacity to hold two languages. bi or tri lingual is the way to go, especially concidering our many dialects our country's language emerged from, with greek, italian, french, latin, and spanish, who's to say it's unpatriotic?

Actually declaring an official language is not a bad idea. This does not mean that it becomes the only language, just that it is one language that all services must be available in. English makes sense internationally because the most places use it.
Now if they would just go ahead with the metric system like they were supposed to do back in the seventies.

Patriotism is sick. As Oscar Wilde said, it is "the virtue of the vicious". If people think they're never going to need to know another language that's fine and there's nothing to criticize about that choice since it's perfectly understandable, but refusing to learn another language because it's deemed unpatriotic is just stupid and ignorant. Arrogant people, elitists, racists and segregationists in general have no business telling others what's rude and what's not. They should look inside before they point the finger at others.

I concur with your opinion. I personally speaks 5 languages and I don't even consider English as my primary language. However, most people in US do communicate in English and to function proper in an English speaking country, one has to learn the language. It has nothing to do with patriotism, it is simple a mean of communication. One can be patriotic without uttering a single word. Do we consider those who are mute unpatriotic? I dare say no.

So what's wrong with that? It's great to know more than one language but if you're the typical American you'll never leave the United States and not have a need to learn another language. If you're not going to use it why learn it, just to make someone else happy? I use to be somewhat fluent in Hungarian and Slovak but since my grandparents died in the 1950's I've forgotten just about all I knew. What good does would any of it do me now?

I think everyone wants to know only one language. Thats WHY they speak a language other than what the majority speaks; In this case, English. Those that get mad about it are expressing feelings of being left out. They don't know how to deal with their ignorance.

You are completely right.
We are taught from an early age, and bread to think that everything American including the language is superior. Therefore, when someone else doesn't know English and live in our country we are insulted. The logic goes like this: "If you live in America, it's only right to learn English. If you live in France, you learn French. It's the right thing to do"
I hope that helps.

My problem is that some people come here and don't make an attempt at learning english. Then they get upset when most people don't know what their talking about.
I don't mine learning other language, but come on. If you live in america you should atleast attempt learning a little bit of english. That's just common scense.

I think if you live in America then you should speak English same as if you live in Spain or Mexico then you should learn to speak Spanish. Its only poite, common courtesy and it makes sense. I get frustrated by living in the UK knowing that there are people who hav lived here for several years, drawing benefits etc and who cannot till understand English! Grr...
