As hard as it is to believe, a lot of people are afraid of change. Or, they believe some of the anti-Linux hoaxes perpetrated by the MS crowd.. One of them was repeated by an earlier poster here, that the only reason Linux is not susceptible to viruses is because not much Linux is used. This is a pure lie. Linux is not susceptible to viruses because every file has permissions, and it is simply impossible for anyone including the user to write to the system files. VIRUSES SIMPLY DON'T WORK ON LINUX. There have been 800 viruses written for Linux and they simply don't work. Stop the lies, please.
I have been using Linux since 1999, and only boot Win when I have to. There are URL's which use non-standard Javascript that is designed by MS.
The good news is MS tried again to use a non-standard XML code, which would stiff the open-source competition for Internet traffic, but it is theorized that ISO, whose approval is needed for almost anything in Europe is going to turn them down.

There are acutally a few viruses in the wild that will exploit Linux. And as Linux gains popularity there will certainly be more.
Linux is quite stable but it is a complete misconception to say that it never crashes. I've crashed many Linux boxes and recovery can be considerably more daunting than your average Windows box! Virtually all of the *nix file systems are very unforgiving of a dirty shutdown and file corruption is VERY possible when it does crash.
While Linux is free from the standpoint that you don't have to pay for it with money it is considerably more complex to work with for the average Windows users. Driver support is seriously lacking especially for new hardware. And many printers, especially inexpensive inkjets will never work with Linux.
And upgrading hardware is maddeningly complex. Although Linux will usually detect your hardware correctly during installation, it has no "plug & play" capability once it's running so if you upgrade your video card to a different brand you will have your work cut out for you!
Linux is a very powerful OS and certainly has its place especially in the data center. But as a desktop OS for the typical Windows user it is a long way from being ready for prime time.

there are viruses for Linux, yet they could't stay very long in a Linux's opposed ecosystem, consequently they are not possible there's some issues that "preserve" a linux laptop against viruses: a million. permissions, maximum executables are owned by utilising root and for this reason a primary consumer does no longer have writing permissions and could't "activate" the virus. it extremely is especially for unexperienced purchasers 2. can not propagate. the way linux is built blocks various "injuries" and blunders that a shopper could make 3. an epidemic can not conceal in an open source product very nicely

I disagree with Redmondinator.
True, Linux is more superior to Windows in Security but it is also a robust platform for pretty much any application or use. Not to mention it has greater compatibility with programs as it can run its own binaries and those of Windows using WINE or an emulator.
Linux also has a bigger community, well people who know what they're doing at any rate.
Windows is easier to use on a daily basis though and the interface is cooler. Gaming Wise Windows is better however.
Oh and try to improve your spelling.
Hope this helps.

Security is the only thing UNIX/Linux has over Microsoft Windows. Sure it's more secure when it comes to viruses, Trojans, spyware and malware but that's only because no one can be bothered writing a virus for an operating system almost no one uses!
And frankly, if you have adequate protection and actually know how to use a firewall then maybe you wouldn't have to use UNIX/Linux. Seriously, who can stand Linux's crappy GUI?!?

Its not average jow user friendly i mean things like shel code come on. Plus linux has relatively the same number of vulnerabilities as windows. But there are so few viruses because it is not widely used. Also the first ever virus released was designed for unix machines. Linux is awesome tho.

"no viruses" just means that noone feels like writing them for linux. Mostly because its not as mainstream as windows. The viruses will go to the most popular OS, no matter what. As far as Linux being awesome, I agree.

Just like paint brushes, hammers, slide rules, operating systems are tools.
Each has it's own purpose and function.
