If you don't keep your head in the clouds and think rationally or rather realistically, it's a good thing. With a gated community you know that your neighborhood is closed off to some degree to outsiders. You also know that most people in the neighborhood are just as interested in security and privacy as you are.
Realisitically, you cannot rely on the gates and video cameras to keep everyone out. In fact we were told when we first came to our community, to consider it a deterrant not an answer.
We have a neighborhood watch that is active and our crime here is low. 99% of the people in my neighborhood are hard working so that means they care as much for their belongings as we do. It's the people within the community, management and the gates that make it awesome.

I'm sure they are great for kids to grow up in. Personally, I detest suburbs and that whole driving culture, and to think that I'd have to drive out of my gated community to get anywhere would just be horrible. But... if you like the suburbs then gated is probably better than un-gated. Less crime probably, and the kids can run around more freely.

The best gated communities are really very secure. Wormwood scrubs villas, Pentoville Drive and Brixton's HMP are fine examples. You can get an apartment there at very reasonable rates. And they have in house restaurant and shops. No need to go out for long periods. You should feel safe there.

neither bad or good
merely a choice
like lawn or no lawn
the aspects of a gated community that seem like advantages to one person are seen as disadvantages to another person
some people like the idea of a gate that keeps some people out
others find it annoying
its just a preference, like the color of the house
brown houses? bad or good? please explain why? not bad or good, just a choice

well... I'm not a big fan... mainly because there seems to be an "us" and "them" idea that is promoted in the issue... a "we are hard workers and we can't mingle with the lazy poor"... which is an idea that is only promoted by the fact that these people never come into contact or know any poor people, with help from the gates...
poor people aren't evil and won't kill everyone and don't hate everyone and don't murder and steal from each other constantly... it's not some "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" wasteland beyond the gate...

Some are good. If they have 24 hour on site security you feel more secure. They know who has come and gone. I know some that tout being gated but never have seen the gate closed.

can be good for security reasons but what about your children when they go out into the real world. Isnt it better to teach them to be more careful and cautious when they are younger. So I am not always sure gates are a good idea. Keep an eye on your children and dont depend on some secruity gaurd to do your job for you.

BAD , BECAUSE theyare a very good indication that if you have to live in a gated community you are totatally surrounded by sheep ( verry verry poor sheep ) whole shal desperately be tearing down fences to get at your daliahs to say nothing of the lawn !

I can't stand them. Too many rules and regs. Usually they are for older people, so there is no youth, no babies, no spice of life.
They have committees that inspect the exterior if your homes to make sure you don't have anything that is aesthetically unpleasing (to them). You can't paint your house without their approval and they choose the colors. For sure you can't have a big party (unless you invite all the neighbors).
Every year the assessments for maintenance and improvements go up.
No thanks, I couldn't stand them, they would be fine for a uptight Wasps, everything perfectly controlled. A preliminary for the neatly kept cemetery

ineffective. it's like hanging a sign that says "here's where the expensive stuff is!". they seem to proliferate in areas that are already fairly safe.
we spend so much time figuring out ways to protect ourselves from threats that we have to be told about. was there ever a time when neighbors would chat at the fence? i don't think mechanical guards are very friendly... but perhaps i'm just not suited to this world we are making.
