What does the term "snap" or "oh snap" mean. Where did it originate?

I heard my 13yr old say it...it is the new way of cussing without cussing...most kids don't realize it...It's a way of saying "OH Crap!"

Its slang. Originated in African American communities

I think it's sort of a "utility expression"... I've heard it used to mean 'wow', 'dang', and 'cool', plus other misc. things.
