Image is nothing its skills and ability that counts...
If Im bleeding to death I dont care what the guys hair cut is as long as he stops the bleeding.
Likewise you don't type with your head.
Not talking about unwashed hair but say green, red, spikey, bits in it etc...
As surely those indicate more of a care for appearance as more effort.
An quality attiude of seeking out the best products.
Creative problem solving origonal thinking, ie smarter.
Not a herd follower but more honest.
Often part of decent youth cultures more into the music then drink so less hangovers.
Oh and as for little old ladies/customers whilst working in a shop I got most compliments from them.
Oh and would I trust a doctor with mad hair... er yeah...
Likewise shop stuff... PC world Vs CEX (computer exchange, small scruffy, metal floor, rock punk kids .... who were experts and knew their stuff with better deals ie oem software as opposed to boxed. Vs dumb suit shop staff

I agree with you that people shouldn't judge based on appearance, but as far as jobs like retail go, the reason is simple - customers *expect* a neat and tidy individual and the shops don't want to upset the people that are essentially paying their wages.
It's pretty messed up, but unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about it.

Some people are accepting of differences, but others aren't. However, the people that are accepting of differences also accept conformists. Hence, if you conform, you are more likely to be accepted just due to the statistics.
Generally, if you want a particular job, you have to fit in with the rest of the shmucks that work there.
Before your next interview, do some surveillance at 8am or 5pm or whenever people come and go. Note their look. If you can get a photo or see you interviewer beforehand, that is a plus. Also, when interviewing, it is helpful to mimic the mannerisms of the interviewer. Subconsiously, the interviewer will feel comfortable with you because you are similar.
Getting a job is all about image and shmoozing without being obvious.

Your right about a lot of what you say, especially image meaning nothing compared to having the skills and abilities. The problem here though is that you are talking about YOUR image. The company is more concerned about THEIR image, and at the end of the day, there is no trade off. It's their image that counts, not yours.
If you want the job you have to conform, if you want the hair, then look for employment elsewhere. It's really as simple as that.

I think it is the employer. Mine are typical (here I go) upper class toffy nosed snobs who think the better the appearance the better you will perform and the better the family you come from. Ha! Underneath my blouse I hide 6 tattoos, refuse to take my nose stud out, wear my blouse untucked, dye my hair a purple/red (natural colours only allowed), swear when I see fit behind closed doors away from the public, and still do a bl00dy good job, even if I do say so myself (if I did a cr ap job I wouldn't have been nominated for an award earlier this year). So as far as I'm concerned my employer can stick that in their pipe and smoke it, coz they can't get rid of me on flimsy terms like appearance!
Ooh, that feels better, rant over!

If you're an emergency room doctor who's job it is to stop people from bleeding to death then you're correct. Something tells me that's not your job.
For every one of your arguments (rationalizations actually) I could come up with a counter argument...
Not a long term thinker - doesn't consider the ramifications of their dress given that others will make hiring/firing decisions
Decent youth cultures - out very late listening to music, not in bed at a decent hour so they'll be ready for work
Seeking out the best products - not when it comes to clothes, often wearing 'vintage' jackets and pants which really just means beat up and second-hand
Creative problem solver - I don't want someone who thinks painting their hair green is a solution for anything.
Finally, it's your life. Live it however you want, but why are you trying to get others to go along with your lifestyle? You don't like them getting you to go along with theirs. If you want to be a punker then live the life and ignore the consequences. Every one is entitled to their opinion of punkers. Actually, I think they all look alike so they're not very original or much of a thinker.

The truth is you have to look at your employee's customer. i mean lets face it if your dressed as a goth and worked in mothercare, you would raise a few eyebrows
i beleive you go to work to work not to look any particular way!
society always wins and thats why employers just dont want that kind of attention unless it suits what they sell.
one day you will sell something and the easiest way to do that is establish a brand where people know what they are going to get .Look at all the brands out there!
These are the people that tell society to look at you funny
both you and i know
those people who do look at you funny will never be free!
regards
thu wish

It's an image thing, as they all want to hire respectable types. Although in a few call centres i've seen people with creative hairstyles working there so I think its mostly limitted to employees that deal with customers face to face.
They don't care whether you spend 3 hours a day making your hair, if it looks silly that's all they'll see about it.

The main problem isn´t that your skills are affected from your hairstyle. In fact the problem has nothing to do with you. The real problem is that you remind your employee how weak character he was and gave up or never tried such a hairstyle and that´s why he wants from everybody else to look the same like him. If not he looks like a stupid.....(not that this isn´t the truth....)

You are automatically ascribing traits to people that may or may not have them based upon their "creative" hair.
In some businesses, an extreme or creative look is an asset. In others, it is a liability.
In some industries, image is everything.
Be smart enough to know when it is appropriate and when it is not.

The employer needs things to be simple neat & tidy. If an employer went with every fade the employees would be to busy looking at each other to do there work that they were employed to do.The way you look effects all employees.
