The story I heard goes back to when he was playing in the Cape Cod League, and he spent so much time talking to fans that one of his coaches told him "hey, just play baseball and stop running for mayor."

Just about every team has a player nicknamed "The Mayor." It usually refers to the player who is most convivial to persons outside of the sport, such as the media - and is not always given out of admiration.

I think he got the nickname while playing in Cincinnati. Although I forgot why. Mario & Rod told the story, and I can't remember.
