SOME GET OLDER AND BITE THEIR NAILS, TWIRL THEIR HAIR OR CRACK THEIR KNUCKLES......
SOUNDS LIKE HE MIGHT NEED SOME ANXIETY COUNSELLING AND A NEW HABIT TO REPLACE THIS ONE. GET THEM A HANDHELD STRESS-BALL TO SQUEEZE....

Possible that he may have a teeth problem,I would need to know more to say what else I think it may be. If the kid is chewing to just chew or is it an anger thing.

a bad habbit which grew with him/her. or a mental disorder. cuz a 14 year old must know what is wrong or bad. try talking to him/her, the 14 year old must understand

It might an obsessive compulsive disorder, vitamin deficiency, a fetish maybe, or some other psychologically related disorder.

Could be any number of things. Anxiety, stress, pica or simply a bad habit. It would probably be a good idea to speak with your doctor about it.
