Pica is classed as an eating disorder. When my mother was pregnant with me she started eating candles and now we both eat them. It isn't dangerous so long as you are not eating anything toxic. I also eat lots of strange things, and it is because both my mother and I are chronically anaemic and allergic to all artificial forms or Iron.

I've read that when people crave odd things like corn starch, clay dirt, ice, etc..it is called Pica and that you should see your doctor right away. I have Pica and it is caused by my severe anemia. I crave all those things listed except corn starch (yuck!). Go to a doctor or start taking iron pills. It should help...

If I'm not mistaken, pica practice is when you eat things that are not food. It can be dangerous if you eat something that is poisonous or dirty. This usually pertains to paint chips that children may eat -- this could be dangerous especially if the paint is lead based. Toddlers do this alot because they are very oral.

Well, I did have this while I was pregnant. Craving for bizarre things. I guess it can be harmful if you ingest toxic materials. For me it went away after delivery. But I know it is common for handicapped, small children 2-3yrs. old and pregnant women to ingest nonfood items(rocks, sand, dirt, feces, paint, laundry starch etc.) It is actually a eating disorder and will usually be temporary. most children outgrow this. In rare occasions medication can be given and counseling on behavior modification. Good luck hope this has helped.
