I have a 2002 Elantra GT with 76k mi. I just had it inspected this weekend and the mechanic told me everything looks good and that there is nothing he could see that I need to keep an eye on.

A friend of mine was in the car the yesterday and told me that he could hear a clank when I hit large bumps in the road and thought my rear struts were going. I also notice that when I accelerate or decelerate frequently in Manhattan traffic I can hear a small squeak coming from rear of the car.

I did some research online but don't notice any of the tell-tale bounciness I should be on the look out for. Does it sound like I new struts/shocks? Is there a better way to check?

Thanks for your help.

Better way is take your mechanic for a test drive and try to reproduce the noise you are concern about.

If you hear "clunk" from the rear when driving over large bumps, there's a good chance it's the struts. Look for leaking around the strut towers or for caked on dirt - that's usually a sign they leaked oil and the dirt stuck to it. Worn struts may become more "bouncy", but it may be that you caught it soon enough to avoid that. Go to an alignment/tire shop and have them check it.

Hey, it's a Hyundai! At 72k noises develop. I would trust the mechanic and ignore the friend.
