I have seen this on cars and it seems to convey solidarity with lesbians (not gay in general or just lesbians specifically, but seems some how related to lesbians). Can someone (or more) explain:

1) what does it mean?

2) what is its origin?

It's the symbol for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). HRC is an orginazation established to bring equal rights not only to the gay and lesbian community, but to all people who have ever been discriminated against for any reason.

.The symbol you speak of is the equality symbol, meaning just that equality for all. Being treated the same no matter your sexual orientation or gender, culture, religious beliefs etc. You are equal to everyone, no exemptions.

I *think* I know what you are reffering to, and I have seen it to just mean an equal sign, believing in equal rights. Though if that is all that is was , and since I haven't seen what *you* have seen, I can only offer that.
