How thin is the line ?

The actual quote is "The line between Genius and Madness is a thin one." A Genius works with reality, and a Madman doesn't. However, when a genius is exploring new areas then some people can think that the genius may have crossed over into madness; that is until the genius is proved correct.

Stupid people are known for their lack of intelligence, they are at the bottom of the bell curve of intelligence—the opposite of geniuses. So the line between genius and stupidity is a very thick one.

People who are considered to be nuts, could be called madmen. If so then according to the original quote the line between someone who is nuts or a genius would be a thin one.

Genius and stupid are at different ends of the intelligence spectrum, so as far apart as you can get. Geniuses can be affected by personality disintegration and every other disorder that normal people have. The concept that Genius and madness are close is no more true than for anyone else, we are in fact all on a chemical tightrope we just don't know it.
Many of the ideas they have that seem 'crazy' are in fact brilliant and simply not immediately apparent or comprehendable by average people.

Here's an example:

A guy was driving down the road and got a flat tire in front of the mental institution. While changing his flat, he accidentally knocked all the lugnuts down the sewer. Not sure what to do, he stood there scratching his head for a few minutes.
A patient of the mental ward witnessed the whole thing. The patient yelled "Hey, why don't you take a lugnut from each of your other wheels, then drive to the parts store down the road and buy some new ones?"
The guy yelled back "That's a brilliant idea! BTW, what are you doing in there?"
The patient yelled back "I'm in here because I'm crazy, not stupid!"

There is a saying "there is no fool, like an educated fool." so what may seem stupid to some might in fact be very brilliant.
