Been to Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii (Big Island). Definitely the Big Island. So diverse. One end is all volcanic rock with an active volcano. Drive north, go through dry prairie-like terrain with tumbleweeds, then green every-day landscape, then rain forest with tall beautiful waterfalls and cliffs overlooking the ocean. All within less than an hour's drive....

It depends on what you want to do. I have family on the North Kohala side of the Big Island. They came there from the island of Madiera in 1840's and stayed to present, to raise pineapple and help on the sugar cane plantations.
From that side you can drive up 13,000 ft. to the mountains, to Parker Ranch. Spectacular views and much cooler...sometimes snow.. Back down at sea level. Hapuna Beach State Park. Kilawea State park- I don't know about now asthe volcano IS presently erupting into the ocean- Just making more real esate, so I can move back. :)
Or you can swim the dolphins at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort. Kona is on the other side. Ironman marathon starts and finishes at the Kona Surf Hotel.
If you like to snorkel The Big Island is the best- Kahaluu and Puuhonua O Honaunau beach-are prefered.
The islands have something for every one-at least the 6 you can go to : Kauai, Lanai, Oahu, Molokai,(no leprosy-which is very treatable and the least contagious of any communicable diseases), Maui, and Hawaii-
(Niihau, once forbidden and Robinson family upholds hawaiin heritage 100% hawaiin spoken there)and Kahoolawe- The island and its waters are managed by the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission, and are held in trust for a future sovereign Native Hawaiian entity.
***Much aloha to you if travel to Hawaii,
Keniki (Denise)

If you like to do outdoorsy things, Kaua'i is the island. It has wonderful hiking and amazing scenery. It's a little "off the beaten track," but it's my personal favorite. There are miles and miles of beach, too.
If you are more into a luxury vacation, Maui is the place to go. I've never been, but my sister had her honeymoon there. Apparently it's a little pricier, but absolutely beautiful.
If you prefer the city and like to do touristy things, O'ahu is the best. O'ahu has lovely beaches, if you don't mind crowds.

Maui, less crowded than Oahu; biking down a volcano was great, beaches are less crowded but still enough people to have some fun

Only been to Oahu and I had a blast. No other beach compares to Waikiki! Love the local lunch plates.

Kauai is beautiful but pretty boring after a few days. It's also hellishly wet.
