The Bush to the American people answer is that they want our ways of life.
The real answer is that they hate our foreign policies like butting into other countries business.

There is no true real reason, but around the world you will find young people (usually males) who are easily swayed by a smooth talking leader, who use truths,half-truths and sometimes out right lies to get a point across. Radicals in the Islamic faith twists the word of their holy book, especially the phrases calling for Jihad and that is their goal. In the US, cults like Heaven's Gates don't become terrorists because their religions goals are different, but they usually end up hurting someone. In Japan, a religious cult was responsible for the terrorist attack on the Tokyo subway. All of these groups use religion to grow power and urge their followers to reach their goals.
Now why the US for Islamic terrorists? Could be many reasons. You can believe those who claim it has everything to do with lifestyle and beliefs (or lack of). They are correct that some of it does have to do with that.
You can claim that it is to do with foreign policy, yet the terrorists have been hitting the US for many decades, and the foreign policy of the US has drifted from being passive to an active role, but this was the role of the super powers in post WWII world, and this was the role of the UN's major supplier of troops for missions. The US foreign policy is a catch 22, no matter what they do, they won't win. Remember, 9/11 was many planned and funded during Clinton's last term, so it is not just GWBs foreign policy they don't like.
Or you can look at it a different way. A place like Iraq, if one group attacks another....who cares? But hit a US target, and then they become front page news. All the major news outlets carry the story and you get your message out. It's sort of like that age old question (paraphrased), if a tree falls and no one is around, does it make a sound? Because of the media reaction in the US, the terrorists know they'll get their message out. (take for example the home grown terrorist, the unibomber. He wanted media attention.)

It is not the only reason, but a major one. American policy in the middle east is extremely bad. First you have the invasion of Iraq and the killing of 100000s of Iraqis. Then you have America's siding with Israel all the time. Third you have America supporting dictatorships in the middleast(like Saudi, Egypt, and the other gulf states,) while at the same time preaching democracy only for Syria and Iran.
I would like to also mention US sanctions on Iraq before the most recent war. While these prevented Saddam from having a good military, over 12 yrs, they caused the death of over 1/2 million Iraqi children and civilians.

So IMHO, it has nothing to do with hating America's freedom.

Yes. They want to eliminate any body that does not believe in their extreme version of Islam. Don't let any body tell you it has to do with international politics or who is president or any thing else. People do not blow themselves up because they disagree with you. They do it because of their religious convictions. They were brainwashed by extremist mullahs that are not willing to do it themselves. (they know better). These people have been at this since 680ad. They tried to whipe out the rest of the world then and were finally defeated 1000 years later on Sept 11 1683. At that time they retreated back to the middle east. They now are back at it again. They believe that god demands them to do it. Check out the words of the leader of Iran. He claims that god intends for him to start Armageddon so as to ready the world for the coming of the 12th imam. At that time the whole world (whats left of it) will be Muslim. He intends to use nukes. I just googled 12Th imam and got the link below. You can find many others and read for your self. We have to take them out or they are going to take us out. We can not ever let our selves think that we can be friends. There is plenty of rational Muslims in the world that don't fall for this idiocy but until the children in the middle east can grow up in a free society and learn to read and write they will be falling victim to this kind of extremism. By the way the crusaides were in self defence against the encroching muslims that were on the verge of overtaking europe. Not some crazed christian action as many would have you believe. And your question is not stupid. Stupidity lies in those that said it was. Also I added a link on the crusades. If you read read "turks" as muslims as that is what they were.

All you have to do is research a few things:
The Bible, Current Events, and History.
Here's some of the key reasons that I have discovered through my own research that even includes talking to peaceful Muslims about the issue:
1) Imperialism. For Centuries, western world Empires have oppressed Muslims, Jews and members of many other faiths. The Crusades remain as one of the most painful reminders to many people in this region as to why Western World interference should be looked at with caution.
Many Arabs view the "War on Terror" as an Imperial Conquest, and it only helps terrorist organizations in recruiting new members. Many people who join these groups as acting - even if it is just in their own mind - as rebels against an invading Imperial force. It also doesn't help us any when western world incursions result in chaos where fighting between rebels/terrorists and our western forces cause many casualties, in addition to destroying their nation's infrastructure.
2) Western World Greed: This causes many problems because it is the thirst of "developed" countries for more non-renewable resources that leads them to many of these countries. Arabs are insulted when they see ANY foreign military or businesses on their "holy ground". Their main three holy sites are known to be in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Palestine.
Additionally, this greed leads western world governments to endorse, and support Arab Dictators just to get to the resources they possess. Many people that join terrorist organizations join in opposition to Dictators and all governments that support them.
So, what is the answer to solve this problem? It certainly isn't wiping them all out, nor is it warfare at all. Working with these societies to build better schools, create more jobs, promote freedom and condemn abuses of human rights (even in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Pakistan) will be a first big step towards defeating terror.
It has been proven through some recent advancements that doing these things encourages people to distance themselves from Fundamentalist Terror Movements. If people aren't suffering or witnessing the suffering of their people due to the violent intervention or greed of the West, then they will elect to live in peace rather than take vengeance.
Evil begets evil. Christ once said: "(Greed) is the ROOT OF ALL EVIL" and another intellectual once said: "All wars are fought for (Greed)"...see the connection? Look at it this way...
Why would Christ say to "LOVE thy Enemy"? For the same reason that Ghandi said "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind".
Love, not hate, will end Terror.

Okay lets get something straight apperently you must not read the news around the world because this question is sort of not smart of you to ask but thats okay. So you want to know why because everyday there are millions of Muslims dying over seas because of the help that the americans send to Israel. Everday there is a muslim dying in Iraq because America didn't like the dictator that was in control because America couldn't get there hands on something that they don't have. Although i do not agree with them to what they did to america don't get me wrong its just those are there reasons. Also remeber the abuse that was going on in those jails in Iraq well believe me they still happen just you and I don't know about it!

Does anyone really know why looney tunes do what they do? We could try to rationalize these terrorist acts but that would defy logic. Because terrorism really has no rational reason it just is. People who resort to acts of terror cannot tell you why they do something because if they were good at "communicating" they wouldn't have to "bomb places to pieces" and make a mess of the world they live in.
I am thankful for the Americans and Israelis and Brits who stand together to fight this mindless terrorism. Count me there if a battle comes......and people who think Dubya is making any money off the war----that was the 70's you are thinking about with Johnson and the Dems....look it up and find out who THEIR HALLIBURTON WAS---back then. :-)
I love all these guys who throw mud thinking they can keep their hands clean. We have history in this country---not the history the "revisionists" have written but the history people who are still alive----LIVED THROUGH! :-)
Thanks for asking

They are religious zealots. No diplomacy can stop them. Radical Muslim leaders use the Koran as a tool to incite hatred. Leaders use Islam to keep people oppressed in Fascist societies. Many of these people live in underprivileged societies, hence they have a lot of anger. So rather than have this anger aimed of the leadership of these countries they deflect it to the USA and the west. As long as these people think that we are the cause of their problems they will not look a their own leadership and ask for some sort of accountability. These groups of people can stay in power be getting their masses hating the USA for their miserable life's rather than blaming their own government.

There IS NO REASON - PERIOD. Rational people try to get along with everybody. These are Not rational (sane) people -- its a racial insanity. They are like children, who upon finding a ant hill -- like to drop things on the ants, drop matches and do other unspeakable things to cause death and destruction and in other ways disturb the order of things. They have no other ways to amuse themselves. If they wanted something from their victims they would communicate that if they thought the "Ants" (us) would give them something to stop their messing around. We are "Ants" to them, and incapable of granting their wishes.
