If the nest is built in an 'ideal' location, they queen may hibernate nearby and rebuild the following year in the same spot on top of the old nest, so you end up with these huge nests in your loft.
Its best to get rid of them.

If you live in the UK, contact your local authority and they will send out a professional to remove it for you.

If you're in the US contact a pest control expert. It may cost a bit, but you can't take chances with wasps, and I certainly wouldn't put my faith in anything you can buy off the shelf in the local Garden Centre's.

BTW, the answer to your question is YES they will return next summer and there will be more of them so the nest will get bigger.

They lay eggs in the nest and the eggs will hatch if you don't get rid of it. Wait until it is dark if you are going to try to spray it. If it is huge, call an exterminator. Wasp stings HURT like the dickens.

stuff the nest full of cheese this will prevent a further infestation the following season!!!

Yep. I left one in my roof one year and the next spring I was infested with them worse than the year before.

yes ...if possible to do in winter better they dont react the same. if you get bit make some mud quick and apply on the sting......

we had a huge one under our eves last summer and it was abandoned in the fall and remained as such

Yes! You will have a problem next year if it is untreated.
