Specific car washing soap can get really expensive, so are there any other alternatives? Hand washing soap? Dish washing soap?

dont use either, they will scratch the paint. get a quality soap for cars, wash often and wax often. if you keep a good wax job on the vehicle it will clean easier so you will use less soap. i also used a spray on detailer (mcguires) inbetween washes, i would rinse it off and use the detailer to finish cleaning. it helps

Be careful!

I understand your concerns with the $ issue, but
hand soap and non-car wash types can dry out your paint,
and damage the finish.
