in the unfinished basement, which i keep clean and use indoor spray in the wood rafters. there is one room that has a ceiling and dry wall up. One day I sttod by the washer and thought I saw something drop. on the floor near me I saw a little fly barely moving. They seem to be on one area of the basement and no other.

Any ideas how to get rid of them? How they got there? I have no refreigerator and do not store food down there.

all it takes is moisture. Condensation could be the problem, but I'd look for a leak especially under the washer. also look neat any airvents, as the flies could be sucked in from outdoors.

Well, if there is a light source in that area of your basement then large zip lock bags of water might work. Take a couple of ziplock bags (clear) and fill them 1/2 to 2/3 up, hang them in that area. The way flies eyes sight is composed they can't focus when around nonn angular shapes with water. The y lose their depth perception... hence they won't go near it. (I keep a couple above my garbage cans... it's fly free!)

Another things I have found out is that flies (and most flying creatures and bugs) seem not to like mint. So putting some mint extract in the area should ward them off. Heck, even an open stick of double-mint gum can even work.

Note- if the flies are only in one area, check that area for mildew or mold, or even dampness. They might be hanging out there for water or some form of moisture in that area.

Good Luck!
