You are good. Never call yourself "stupid" for returning property of a purse to the police station. Especially if it had all of its information inside: i.d., social security card, money, credit cards, liscense, important papers, whatever. Now, if it had none of these things in its possession and was just money in it, then you are considered a SAINT considering other people would've took the money and damned the purse.
Hopefully, if information was in there, they can contact that said person and then they could retrieve it.
You did a good deed and what will happen is called Karma, something good will come back to you because of what you did.

You are good. I once lost my purse and got it back in the post. Unfortunately the sender didn't include a number, otherwise I would have gave him something for his honesty. Giving it back is a good example that there are people out there who care.
I also once found a purse with credit card, etc. I contacted the person't bank and they forwarded my number to her. She was so chuffed about my honesty, that she said that I can keep the cash that was in the purse and should just cut the credit card in two, which I did.
I think you did a great thing :)

It's easy ... just think how you would feel if it was your purse that was lost and the finder kept it instead of handing it in. Well done you for doing the right thing! If no-one claims it within a certain time limit the police usually let you have the cash.

you're not stupid at all. You're a great person. But become a smarter person and get the wallet to the person directly. There will be some info that identifies the person on that wallet. A great deal of the police bonuses come from the violation (entrapment) tickets and property confiscation.

I found a ring once. I handed it into the police and received a phone call 2 hours later from a jewellers. Apparently one of there staff had lost it during his dinner hour. They were mending it for an old lady who's husband had just died.
The old lady found out and sent me £10 as a reward.
The jewellers called me and told me to pop in to see them.
They gave me a FULL £5
I found out the ring was worth over £3000.00
£15 for a £3000.00 ring!
If I'd have known i would have kept the ring and sent them £15!
P.S Yes i would have felt guilty for the old lady but £3000 is £3000

A few years ago I lost my billfold at Wal Mart. Actually I left it in the buggy. I did not realize it until I returned home. I was sure it would never be returned. What makes it worse is I had just cashed a $300. check!
The greatest couple from somewhere in Oklahoma found it and turned it in. Nothing missing! I never knew their names but I am eternally grateful.
Every time I find something like that I turn it in!
Good for you!

you did the right thing, and you should know it....what would you want someone who may find your purse or wallet to do? wouldn't you be relieved and thrilled and encouraged? just imagine all the hassle you saved that person. ever tried to replace all the stuff in your purse?
good job!

Good. I know it's hard to do but you did the right thing.
I found a credit card over the summer and I called the c/c company up and told them that I found it also.
