Yes indeed,I suffered from sleep deprivation for several years due to a medical condition, now I can get more rest in four hours sleep than I did previously even if I went to bed for 12 hours.
The human body seems to adjust to lack of sleep and compensates, your mind and body go into survival mode, your metabolism slows down and your ability to react quickly to situations is impaired,as it happens we don't realise the steady onset of continual fatigue, but once you get a good nights sleep it is unbelievable the difference it makes to your levels of alertness.
So yes you can get passed the stage of sleep but eventually it will catch up with you !

Sleep is a stage like you rightly put it.
Every stage has its end
As long as you have not died, you can pass the stage of sleep

take it from a long time insomniac
you can get past the stage of needing sleep but you'll get cranky unable to focus, dizzy etc. At that point you'll keep on running untill your engine cuts out (you go out cold)

To the point where I feel like I wanna bounce of the walls, go slightly crazy and do mad things, only to then crash and burn into a messy heap on my bed.

In the morning I hear some pretty crazy stories from my other half over what I did.

yes I do , I go into random hold and think coffee is great. I sometimes am happy just lying with my eyes closed and listening to the sea and dreaming a little. But sometimes our bodies need rest , and that can be found by being close to someone who feels good to be with. as Crosby said...we have had our ups and downs , but we are still playing together.
dream a little.

I think that you can become OVERTIRED, then go onto auto pilot, and that can keep you ticking for a further 12 hours, but in my case, tiredness normally clocks in, and zzzzzzzzzzz
