Laziness. Pure laziness.
Those people are trying to make themselves feel bigger, stronger, more important. . . and the easiest route they can find is to knock someone else down.
I've noticed this in reading--and writing--movie & theatre reviews as well; it's generally a whole lot easier to come off sounding all clever when one says an unkind thing than it is when saying a kind thing.
Mean people just aren't up to the intellectual exercise of finding something good to say. And maybe their mamas didn't raise them right, if they don't know any better than to name-call.
Oops, now I'VE gone and done it with a "your mama" comment :)

Watch C-Span sometime. It's worse than you think. They do that on the floor of the Senate.
My theory is that democrats feel they are overlooked due to the republican majority. You hear the phrase "rubber stamp for the president" alot. It seems that they all are moving in step and have the votes to drown out representatives that aren't republican. The only veto Bush used in 5 years was to oppose funding for stem cell research.

I completely agree...In fact I have a group of email "friends" with whom I enjoy a hearty political debate fairly regularly.
Unfortunately, even with us it has begun degrading into a Libs vs. NeoCons name-calling event, which is unfortunate, since I know that they are all intelligent people who actually pay attention to issues and research things before they vote.
I have decided, and advised my friends, that they are not to call me Democrat or Republican, Liberal or Conservative. Instead, they are to refer to me as "Concerned American".
I would hope (please?!?!) that ALL of us are smart enough to see past the labels and vote based on the facts of the situation, as opposed to picking party lines. Just because we're registered with one party doesn't mean we have to stop listening to people who are registered with another party...You never know when someone else's perspective might help you see things in a better light!

Its about ratings... If everybody "reported" things as they are instead of sensationalizing events news would be boring. So, there has to be a "bad guy," which is usually the party in power.
As with everything else in America, it boils down to money.

I have stopped the name calling here, unless I'm responding to an ignorant fiscal conservative Republican comment posed as a question

Because people are afraid to think for themselves. So they let Rush Limbaugh or Alan Combes or Al Franken or whoever do the thinking for them.
