My Dad gave me some old stuff from his attick. Inside one box was an old "black Sambo" wooden puppet. It is one of those things that I am not sure I should keep because of the stereotype. Ideas?

Definitely keep it. It is historical and has meaning, even if you do not agree with it's symbolism. Should we throw away everything that is of a past idea that we do not relate with? Just put your beliefs aside and enjoy it as a historical find, it doesn't reflect your values, but we cant erase the past.

it may be worth $100 or so; depending on condition;

it is a historical artifact and you could keep it as a collectible and use it to help teach your children the reality and the rottenness of racism; or you could sell it and give the money back to your dad as a gesture of appreciation-and surely there is much to be appreciative about ones parent-

It's up to you. Many people would like that relic as a "museum piece" or a taste of history. It's not as bad as, say, a Nazi swastika. You might keep it as a memento to your Dad or his family.

If you feel you can't keep it, sell it on Ebay, or give it to a toy museum or African-American museum. Ferris State University in Michigan has such a museum:

It might actually be a collectors item now. This may serve as a reminder of unenlightened times but it is also part of the history of that time.

That's too sweet. I don't think it's too bad since all of the old Warner Brothers cartoons can still be had.
