why arent there any women coal miners?

I work with several women. It is a very tough dirty job. Also it is hard to use the bathroom underground, more difficult than going in the woods. They sure look cute in their overalls, though.

It's very simple. The first time coalmining became a real job was during the Industrial Revolution when fossil fuels were first being used. At this time, women didn't have equal rights and few women even worked at the time. The few who did worked at "women" jobs, such as working phone operators etc... Thus, even if a woman WANTED to get a job as a coal miner, it would be impossible for her. Even now, there are still "gender" jobs, and although this barrier is sometimes crossed now, the main reason for there being no women coal miners is that old habits are just hard to break.

Actually, these days there are several. However, in the back hills of West Virginia it is just culturally unacceptable for a woman to work, let alone work in the coal mines. My family, very fortunately, got OUT of there!

Because there are alot of physical requirements for that job, that alot of woman can't do. Just like you don't want a 90 pound girl as a firefighter, if she can't life the hose or victums and most likely will get herself or others killed.
