I absolutely agree with you on this; same wavelength! As Bowling For Soup said in their song, "....there was music still on MTV..." The channel started to go downhill when they couldn't resist the appeal of mass marketing. They started doing reality shows, contests, fashion shows, personal video diaries, news, surveys, celebrity interviews, product positioning, social messages, kids stuff, and nostalgia (i.e. "I Love The '90's;" funny, but a waste of time) Now, you only get about 2 videos before they go to another long commercial break. It SUCKS!! And MTV2, VH1 and CMT (Country Music Television) all have the same problem. It's just not about the music anymore. It's all about pop-culture and $$$!

Rap didn't kill MTV. In fact, it seems like 90% of the few videos they actually show on MTV are rap songs. It was Reality TV that killed MTV. For a while, it seems like all they would show would be the Real World or Road Rules. Now it's Sweet Sixteen, Cribs, Pimp My Ride and who knows what else. Just reality TV. I stopped watching MTV a long time ago. However, if you want some nostalgic videos, VH1 Classic has some cool shows like the Alternative, or Smells like the 90's. Hey does anyone else remember that Remote Control show?

Wait, MTV plays music videos...?! I thought they only showed Laguna Beach, Real World and Cribs!
Just kidding of course, I remember a time when all music video channels played were music videos.
I don't, however, agree that "rap" is what killed the video channel (after all, there are some great rap videos out there), I think it's reality tv that killed it!

I remember when MTV actually meant what it stands for---Music Television. Now all I really see are silly reality shows that have little if anything to do with music. It was fine in the earlier days when there were only 4 or 5 'non-music related' television shows, but now programs with actual songs have gone into the minority. They tried to rectify the situation with MTV2, but I still don't see why the original couldn't have remained as it was with an extra station being created for the shows they currently air.
I haven't stopped watching the channel completely, but I don't watch it as often as I used to. I think they should start calling it RTV---Reality Television, because that's pretty much all it is! :)

Ahhh I remember those good old days... back in 1996. The first show came that year "The Real World (San Francisco??)" and started it all. Now those dumb shows are on all the time. I want the videos back like it used to be.
I want my MTV!

I can't even watch MTV anymore. They never play videos and all they have on are really stupid reality shows. "Who wants to date my mom?" I miss the old MTV when they actually played music. It was called Music Television for a reason and now its ruined. What a disappointment.

Rap DID kill, not only the video channel, but music in general. Now, it is nothing but "i got a mother ******* ***** in my crib and i smoke weed and **** her all night long cus im a pimp." i mean, cmon now, WHO ACTUALLY LISTENS TO THAT ****??
Unfortunately, I don't remember when MTV played music because I was probly too young and busy watching "Legends of the Hidden Temple" on Nick. Now that show was the best! lol

I remeber that now they only play those at like 3 in the morning...who wants to stay up that late
I think they should devote like 2 hours a day to videos instead of all those stupid shows they play like My Own~
