Depending on what kind of car you have. If you have a car that was built in the 90's or older, you need to change it every 36,000 miles. The radiator needs to be flushed and you need to check your coolant hoses. It's made of rubber and when the coolant gets hot from cooling the engine, it will eventually gets hard and eventually, it will leak. You can usually tell if it's getting old. You need to flush it and you need a machine for that or if you want to do it the old fashion way, just drain it. Flushing it works better because it can get rid of debris on your radiator. Now, if you have a newer veh, lets say 2000 or newer, you don't have to service the coolant until every 100,000 to 110,000 miles.

When To Change Coolant

depends on the year and make of your car. If you have a GM car and it is 95 or older then it takes standard green coolant and should be changed every 3 years or 36k miles. if you have a GM car and is 96 or newer then it takes Dex-cool and should last 5 years or 100k miles. Fords and chrysler are a little different some take extended coolant like the dex-cool and some take green. A chrysler will say special coolant required on the overflow bucket if it is the long life coolant.

You should check you coolant level regularly when you fuel up especially when it is warmer. You can buy a cheap tester from an auto parts store whick will give you an idea of what the water/antifreeze mixture is like. Your manual should give you an idea how often to flush the system or ask your dealer or a rad shop.

You can buy a small tester at Auto Zone and check it yourself. In my experience I haven't had to refill or change my coolant every two years.

Depends on how old your car is and how many miles you have on it. Have the coolant tested. If it's okay, you don't need to change it. If you have to refill it all the time, you've got a leak.

Refill as needed. Generally every 2 years with average driving use, but do check your manual.

Follow the Maintenance Manual. Check level of the overflow tank every time you refuel. I drain my cooling system and refill with fresh anti-freeze about once a year. Dispose of used anti-freeze appropriately.
